Thursday, February 15, 2007 15:44

MSDN has just released an article on how to write SQL syntax queries to return the most relevant results for Enterprise Search in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. The article provides best practices when you want to achieve certain search results by following certain basic guidelines for writing good SQL syntax queries. If you want to learn Enterprise Search - Time To Get Serious. You can construct a SQL search query to achieve improved result relevance in custom search solutions you create for Enterprise Search in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. Sort Query by Rank In Enterprise Search SQL syntax, the ORDER BY clause sorts the query results based on the value of the column you specify. The relevance of each result that is returned for a particular search query is represented by an integer value returned in a column named "Rank". You can specify Rank as the column by which to sort the results in the ORDER BY clause, in descending order, as follows:

SharePoint Knowledge Network

Thursday, January 18, 2007 16:19

Big organization typically have a hard time sharing knowledge across the whole company. Microsoft most likely has the same problem (e.g. Many people working on the same problem in different departments unbeknownst to each other). An add-on is available for MOSS 2007 which will make knowledge sharing easier from now on. The add-on is called the Sharepoint's Knowledge Network. Basically, from what I gather, the Knowledge Network works by scanning the e-mail boxes of the organizations employees and using an algorithm, determines what the user's expertise is, what they are working on, and who they coolaborate with most often. I haven't tried it myself, so I still have obvious questions regarding security and most importantly privacy. That said, I think the logistics if th solutions seems like a good idea. Nobody wants to create a skills database, let alone maintaining it. This approach seems to resolve this problem. A brief description: Knowledge Network for Office SharePoint Server 2007 is powerful, easy to use software that helps people make better decisions more quickly. It automates the discovery and sharing of undocumented knowledge and relationships, enabling you to quickly locate who knows whom and who knows what within your constantly changing organization. Knowledge Network will make your organization more effective by providing one of the quickest ways to connect with people who can successfully impact your business.

Integration of MOSS 2007 and MS CRM Will Cost You

Thursday, December 21, 2006 9:17

Charlie Maitland's blogs about how expensive it is to share data via Data Catalogue. Here's a snippet of his post: It turns out that the EULA for Microsoft CRM and other Dynamics products forbids the use of any other application accessing the data unless the user has a full licence. This means that, in the case of CRM, every Sharepoint user that wants to use a data catalogue to view CRM data needs a £670 CRM CAL in addition to their MOSS Enterprise CAL at £120! (Other Licence rules such as Portal licences may apply for other products) Now that's the problem with Microsoft, isn't it? Not really, they are a solution provider and to have the ability to make two products work together, wouldn't you need licenses for both products? Am I reading this wrong?

Blogtronix To Give Sharepoint A Run For It’s Money. Not!

Wednesday, December 20, 2006 14:44

Jeremiah Owyang posts that "if you’re looking at upgrading to the new Sharepoint for it’s social media features, or at Sharepoint itself you must check out Blogtronix." Although I respect the guy, I couldn't agree with him. Blogtronix is nothing compared to the features provide by Microsoft Sharepoint 2007. Sure it might cost a bit, but dollar for dollar, Sharepoint 2007 lives up to the hype and hope more and more people realize this. Even Jeremiah has some doubts as both products are for different users: I’ve used Sharepoint, and have tried demos of the recently released blog and wiki features. Perhaps the primary difference between Sharepoint and Blogtronix is that Sharepoint was intended and grown to be a collaboration tool, and now social features are being added on top. Blogtronix is less of a collaboration tool, and more of a social media platform. In many business use cases, both could meet the same needs. Although, it does raise a good question, whether Web 2.0 features like wikis and blogs were an after though or a general progression for Sharepoint?
