Hi all
I’d like to see an article detailing all the steps necessary to install and configure MOSS 2007. Something that would give an admin setting up SP for the first time a solid foundation. You could start with Pre installation tasks like creating the service accounts, where they go, what they will be used for. Next SSP creation and what exactly an SSP will provide, then move on to the Application pool…. Etc. You get the idea. The information is out there, but it would be nice to have one place that covered the setup in great detail. Better to do it right the first time.

Things I’d like to see covered in depth:
Code:
1. Incorporating AJAX into web parts;
2. Web Part communications (between web parts);
3. Globalizing AJAX-based web parts;
4. Parts interacting with WCF services.
Deployment:
1. Deployment of server farms outside Active Directory or Domains;
2. Securing public facing server farms.
Thanks!
Step.

I work in Higher Education and an advantage of Sharepoint is that it is all ready included in our agreement. With this said, we are planning on taking SharePoint/MOSS and developing a public facing internet site. More information published over the set-up and deployment of internet facing websites on a single server and server farm setup would be great.

Most of previous responses were quite good.
But, what is needed can be complex filtering of items in SharePoint List Views using dropdown lists, creating complex lookup fields, more details on customizing and localization of web parts and web part decvelopment in general. Also, I think that overall development process - from planning to implementation based on some rules should be covered in more detail

In general a lot of places are lacking how to write webparts for MOSS 2007. Maybe add an intro to webparts section that has a tutorial on how to write a “hello world” webpart and then some that add controls. I would like to see a lot more dealings with webparts and the object model. Maybe how to manipulate and create custom lists from the object model.
I am also noticing a lack in good tutorials related to writing an application definition for the business data catalog.
I would also like to see more about writing custom websites for Sharepoint in Asp .Net 2.0 and something about MOSS 2007 running at an institution only using Office 2003 (talk about the ntages and advantages to running Office 2003 and Office 2007 alongside MOSS 2007).
This is a really good idea to shove a post out there like this one. You should put out a post like this every once in a while. It is great for topic ideas and project ideas.

* Records Management within a regulated industry (e.g. FDA).
* Accessing user profile information in workflows.
* Workflows with VS
* Adding servers that will take over dominant roles.
* External facing MOSS sites.
* Many of the Workflow tutorials I’ve come across either are using MOSS Designer which is too limited for complicated workflows because of a lack of access to information, or they use VS and expect a very high degree of programming ability. So, VS workflow dev. from start to finish with all the little steps well explained, detailed, and with screen shots.

One of the challenges that I have with Shahrepoint is the difficulty in customizing the WSS implementation for an intranet for a small business. The default setup isn’t optimal for most intranets. I couldn’t find any good book anywhere on best practices for creating an Intranet with minimal custom programming.

Hello!
Me and one of my colleague started 1 year ago to develop our company’s portal with the ‘fresh’ SharePoint product, mostly to automate the business processes. Since then, we had several SharePoint projects, facing different types of problems :).(eg. from internet facing sites to records management)
We are mostly interested on how ‘far’ we can go also with the development capabilities of SharePoint 2007.
My personal interest is for my PhD diploma, where I want to extend SharePoint’s Search to be more a semantic one.
PS: I will keep my fingers crossed..to get this book;)

I am a project manager for my company and we have just received the approval of our executive committee to implement SPS 3.0 initially, as a guinea pig, in the Program Management Office with the eventual outcome of our intranet running off of SPS 3.0. On this project, I will be the PM as well as the local admin for the PMO. We are a relatively small consumer electronics firm, and are looking to create a portal for project teams to collaborate globally as well as manage project communication flows.

Hi,
I’d like to see more on customising Sharepoint (master pages,etc). More on using workflows and more on integrating external data sources into a sharepoint site.
Oh, also, more on personalisation for users and how to overcome security concerns (data protection, sox, etc) so that you can guarantee the user gets only their data.
